Our Industrial Food System

The Sun

It may not seem like it but, the sun plays a key part in our industrial food system.

It's where it all starts.

Cars, Trucks & Machines

Journeys to another factory where it is processed and packaged.

Are you lovin' it?

HFCS

The corn could be transferred to a HFCS. Here the corn is chemically broken down so it can be formed and incorporated into other foods.

Government Subsidies

Health risk

(high in sugar)

This is dangerous because it is almost everything

Subsidies are a form of payment from the government to the farmers which persuades them to over produce corn.

Environmental Damage is present through the amount animal waste (release of E-coli into soil)

At the end of our industrial food system we have us. The ones who are eating all of this. It ends by giving the people major health problems like:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease

The corn could be transferred to a Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation.

CAFO

Cars, Trucks & Machines

The Purple arrows indicate the use of fossil fuels.

When fossil fuels are used environmental damage is present.

Cars, Trucks & Machines

These put together creat our big macks and happy meals.

Glut of cheap corn

At a CAFO the living conditions the animals are forced to live in are horrendous. They are mushed together into small areas of space so they are forced to live in their own waste. On top of this cows are fed corn, due to the large quantity it's cheap. This can cause a common health virus called E-coli.

After the harvest the farmer ends up with a large pile of corn. It is then sent off to two different places.

Here animals are given:

  • Growth Hormones
  • Antibiotics
  • Digestive Aids

Mainly to insure the animals don't die before reaching the market

Environmental Damage sets in when the farmers tightly pack the corn plants and eliminate nutrients in the soil.

Also affecting the environment are the:

  • Fertilizers
  • Herbicides
  • Pesticides

Used to grow the corn

Animal Processing Plant

The Animals from the CAFO are brought to an Animal Processing Plant where they are killed and treated to eliminate diseases. They are then packaged and sent off to the purchasing companies.
