Rejections of Liberalism

People's Republic of China

Only has ONE party

  • ruled by the Communist Party of China (CPC)
  • its power is enshrined in China's constitution
  • NO open contest elections
  • CPC wins ALL THE TIME

One of the most important principles of Liberalism is that the people have an open choice in who can become their leader and have a say in what direction politics will go. In the People's republic of China is only one party (the CPC), so there is no real choice in who will become leader or where politics go.

  • General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee
  • President of the People's Republic of China
  • Chairman of the PRC Central Military Commission

RESTRICTED

civil

LIBERTIES

  • REPRESSED Freedom of Expression
  • Censorship and manipulation of the press and Internet worsened
  • The Communist leader sees the Internet as a vehicle ‘for disseminating socialist advanced culture.’
  • 1982 constitution guarantees freedom of speech.
  • the Chinese government often uses the subversion of state power and the protection of state secret clause to imprison those who are critical of the government.
  • NO Political Freedom
  • The PRC is known for its intolerance of organized dissent towards the government.
  • Dissident groups are routinely arrested and imprisoned, often for long periods of time and without trial. Incidents of torture, forced confessions and forced labour are widely reported.
  • These are just a few examples of civil liberties that do NOT exist.

In an ideology that follows the principles of Liberalism, civil liberties must be endowed to each individual. Obviously this is not the case in China.

I

ndoctrination

and Propaganda

  • From YOUNG age, chinese children are indoctrinated with NATIONALISTIC ideals.
  • PROPAGANDA in the People's Republic of China refers to the PRC Central People's Government's use of propaganda to SWAY public and international opinion in FAVOUR of its policies.

Indoctrination and propaganda repress Freedom of Thought, one of the civil liberties that need to be kept in a liberalist country.

Secret

Police

& Military

  • The Ministry of State Security (MSS) is the security agency of the People's Republic of China.
  • It is also the Chinese government's largest and most active foreign intelligence agency, though it is also involved in domestic security matters.
  • The People's Liberation Army (PLA) is the unified military organization of all land, sea, strategic missile and air forces.
  • It is the military arm of the Communist Party of China .
  • The PLA is the world's largest military force, with approximately 3 million members and has the world's largest (active) standing army, with approximately 2.25 million members.

The secret police puts the people in a state of fear so that they will not revolt, publish opposing opinions, etc. It restricts civil liberties like Freedom of Movement, Thought, Press, and Speech.

The military enforces the presence of fear.

Centrally

Planned

Economy

  • 98% of the financial institutions are government owned.
  • Government maintains a major role in the urban economy.
  • Significant economic sector are supervised by government organizations.
  • Economic plans and policies are implemented by a variety of direct and indirect control mechanisms.

In most liberal countries, instead of using a centrally planned economy, the Free Market system is used. The Free Market system ensures that the government has a low economical role.
