Against the advice of aboriginal fighters, Dollard was supported by the Governor of Montreal to organize an expedition west. He had a group of 17 French men and 44 Huron and Algonquin allies. They went on a ten-day canoe trip up the Ottawa river and set up camp not far from Carillon, Quebec. They expected to ambush a few Iroquois hunters, but instead of finding hunters they found a full army ready to attack. They took shelter in an abandoned fort and held out for a week. All the French men were killed, as well as most of the Huron and Algonquin, but as a result of the battle, the Iroquois had to regroup and were unable to invade.

ADAM DOLLARD SYMBOL

ADAM DOLLARD

The dog in my symbol symbolizes loyalty. Adam Dollard was loyal to New France and saved it from destruction. The swords represent courage and strength that Dollard used to cope with the problems at hand and "overcome" them. The cross represents Dollards loyalty to the christian faith.

CHALLENGES AND DIFFICULTIES

Besides the obvious that Adam Dollard had to keep his small band of men alive during a battle against an army to prevent New France from being attacked. If they had given up and tried to retreat, New France would have been in danger of being destroyed by the Iroquois. He was also accused of stealing furs and was said to have received alot of criticism despite the fact their is no evidence that he behaved dishonourably. Some people at the time said that Dollard was trying to make up for problems he had had in France but because of his unknown past nothing was justified.

IMPORTANCE TO CANADIAN HISTORY

LIFE ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Adam Dollard was a remarkable French man. He managed to become a French garrison commander of Montreal at age 24, and save the colony of New France by thwarting an Iroquois army. One of the observers of the day called the battle in which Dollard and his men were under attack by over 700 iroquois and managed to destroy a third of the attacking army, "The greatest feat of arms in modern history"

PERSONAL HISTORY

Adam Dollard was born in Ormeaux, France on July 23, 1635. He came to Fort Ville-Marie as a volunteer soldier in 1658. He became a garrison commander of Fort Ville-Marie which later became Montreal. Nothing much is known about his life before coming to Canada but it is believed he had commanded soldiers in France. One theory is that dollard first came to New France as a settler.

QUOTATION STATEMENT

Adam Dollard was selfless and put New France and his colony before himself by staying to fight instead of trying to leave. His heroic actions were great and he should be remembered as a important figure in Canadian history.
