Simon has a different perspective on things, were as he says the candle buds look like candles. Jack agrees but continues to cut them down.
"With the fading of the light the riotous colors died and the heat and urgency cooled away. the candle buds stirred. Their green speals drew back a little and the white tips of the flowers rose delicately." (pg. 57)
Simon loves natrue, and the description here is filled with a scese of awe for it. Simon is the Christ figure who goes into the wilderness to pray, and the jungle shows him its undetected beauty.
The buds symbolize the fragility and majesty of nature which Jack is about to slash with his knife. This also gives the reader a glimpse into Simon's artistic and spiritual nature.
Simon ,not being afraid of the candle buds, saw them in a whole different way. This makes him look like more of a Christ figure, because Christ views the world differently than others. Jack cuts the buds down because he thinks they are usless. He doesn't like them because he doesn't like the forest. This shows his savagery early in the book. Ralph is focused only on what they need. He likes the forest for what they could use to get off the island.
"The candle buds opened their wide white flowers glimmering under the light that pricked down from the first stars. Their scent spilled out into the air and took possession of the island." (pg. 57)
Simon's perspective changes like the candle bud the blooms him mind enlightened. He has compassion, spirituality, and loves solitude for prayer, meditation and communion with nature. He is the most spiritual character in the book
The candle buds are flowers that give off light, which looks like they are a candle. Simon likes them because Simon is good, he likes the candle buds. Jack slashes at them, saying that they could not help provide them food. Ralph says that they look like candles but they cannot be lit. Simon was the only one to believe that they could use the flowers.
