"What word do you know that sounds like that word?

"Can you think of a word that rhymes?"

"Well you know how to spell ___. So let's think about how we might spell ___."

"You know another word that starts or ends like that. Use that word to help you spell."

When?

How?

We can use this strategy whenever, for levels 1-8 for any genre or text type.

We introduce it during shared writing.

During shared writing we can model a knowledgeable writer at work and voice over our thinking.

Say the word

Hear the sounds

Think, "what word do I know how to spell that sounds like that word?"

Make the connection

Make the approximation

"Well I know how to spell _, so I can use _ to help me spell _!"

I can also spell fat.

If I can spell at...

I can also spell hit.

If I can spell it...

How do you spell _____?

Strategy 8.14

This goal is important because we want students to understand the power of writing and the importance of knowing how to spell words so that others can comprehend what they have written.

"Use the words you know to spell the unknown words."

With this strategy we encourage students to use their background knowledge to try spelling the words with the same spelling pattern as the word they already know.
