Societal connections between Cuba and Animal Farm

The novel Animal Farm has many societal connections to present-day Cuba. Issues such as leaders stopping opposition, trading issues, and hiding bad information from the general public. There are some good points though, such as taking steps to make connections with neighbors.

Problems with trading

Stopping people from speaking out against the leadership

The leaders of the nation are shutting down protesters, and anyone who opposed the leaders.

Animal Farm

Cuba

Both of these examples involve the leaders of the nation shutting down any members of the society who would act against the leaders. Whether it's through imprisonment or murder, the leaders had the intentions to end anyone who dare oppose them.

"The three hens who had been the ringleaders in the attempted rebellion over the eggs now came forward and stated that Snowball had appeared to them in a dream and incited them to disobey Napoleon's orders. They too, were slaughtered. Then a goose came forward and confessed to having secreted six ears of corn during the last year's harvest and eaten them in the night. Then a sheep confessed to having urinated in the drinking pool--urged to do this, so she said, by Snowball--and two other sheep confessed to having murdered an old ram, an especially devoted follower of Napoleon by chasing him round and round a bonfire when he was suffering from a cough. They were all slain on the spot. And so the tale of confessions and executions went on, until there was a pile of corpses lying before Napoleon's feet..." (Orwell 93)

"The Cuban Commission for Human Rights and National Reconciliation (CCDHRN)—an independent human rights group the government views as illegal—received over 7,188 reports of arbitrary detentions" (World Report 2015: Cuba).

They are arresting human rights activists.

This is where Napoleon had the dogs murder all animals that said Snowball told them to do acts.

Wanting to set up trade deals, but not being able to successfully do so.

Now, can anyone guess what this is supposed to represent?

King= government

Queen= rich dudes

Jack= media

Jack of hearts= local press

Everyone with a face card stand up!

Cuba

"The resolution, introduced by Cuba, demanded an end to the embargo -- which it refers to as "blockade." The resolution also calls on all U.N. members to refrain from interfering in other countries' internal affairs as well as the freedom of international trade and navigation" (Labott).

The U.S. would not fully lift the embargo right away, Cuba wants it off immediately and fully

Animal Farm

"One Sunday morning, when the animals assembled to receive their orders, Napoleon announced that he had decided a new policy. From now onwards Animal Farm would engage in trade with the neighboring farms (Orwell 76)."

this was an issue because it was against what the animals said they would do, to never trade with humans

Both nations are attempting to end an embargo with their neighbors, and trying to set up trade to improve their economy.

Leadership hiding the truth from general public

The Cuban government isn't doing very good, but the leaders don't want anybody to find out, much like the pigs hiding the food shortage from the outside world

Animal Farm

Cuba

"The corn ration was drastically reduced, and it was announced that an extra potato ration would be issued to make up for it. Then it was discovered that the greater part of the potato crop crop had been frosted in the clamps, which had not been covered thickly enough... It was vitally necessary to conceal this fact from the outside world (Orwell 85)."

"Statistics unavailable in the local press reveal that, by international standards, 7 out of 10 Cubans live in poverty" (Montes).

Animal farm and Cuba both are hiding evidence that the society is doing quite poorly.

Cuba is hiding its poverty from the general public.

Napoleon wanted to hide the fact that there was a shortage of food from the humans, in fear that the humans would start spreading more rumors about the farm.

Leaders trying to improve relations with other societies.

The Cuban Government wants to lift the ban of trade placed on them from the U.S. Similarly to Animal Farm when the pigs begin to trade with the humans.

Cuba

"The meeting is considered a major step because the United States’ trade embargo against Cuba was initially enacted after Fidel Castro, the Cuban leader at the time, expropriated land from American companies" (Robles).

Both Cuba and the pigs from Animal Farm are trying to improve relations with other countries (or farms). Similarly, trying to do so by the means of trade.

Cuba wants to put an end to a trade embargo placed upon them by the U.S.

Animal Farm

"Through the agency of Whymper, Napolean was engaged in complicated negotiations with Frederick and Pilkington. The pile of timber was still unsold. (Orwell 101)"

This is when Napoleon was trying to sell the woodpile to one of the neighboring farms.
