  • In addition to the yearly calle ocho festival the viernes cultures festival takes place in Little Havana the last Friday of every month.
  • Viernes cultures also reflect Cuban culture through art, music, and cuisine

Little Havana & Miami

Food

  • Calle Ocho is not only a popular street in Little Havana but also a popular festival thrown in march each year
  • The Calle Ocho Festival was created in 1979 by Cubans to educate south floridans on Cuban Culture.
  • The Festival remains popular today and host over 1 million attendees every year.
  • Cuban cuisine is very unique because it reflects the islands spanish and african influences.
  • These influences are mostly reflected through the foods sauces and spices
  • Cubans use a heavy amount of spices in their food focusing on garlic.

History

Music

  • 70% of Miamis population in Hispanic 56% is Cuban
  • Little Havana has become known as the Cuban capital of America with 85% of its population being made up of latinos (mostly cubans)
  • Cubans started Miamis latin influence, however many latinos from other coutries have migrated here due to its strong presence latino culture.
  • Cubans listen to a wide variety of different latino genres given the depth of their culture
  • One of the more traditional genres is the son cubano while the timba is more modern
