Sawyer Feet Burns

August 30, 2015

Narrative

During his initial size-up of a recently burned tree, a sawyer noticed that he could still feel the heat coming from the gound adjacent to the tree he was planning to cut.

Utalizing the help of another crew member, they mixed cool dirt with the hot coals for approximately 15 minutes until the work area was sufficiently cool.

A hose lay was available nearby, but the firefighters elected not to cool the area further.

For the next few minutes, the sawyer stood in the same area while he successfully dropped the tree.

Injured Sawyer Receives Medical Attention

Line Paramedics and Line Safety Officers responded and placed bandages around the sawyer's feet to minimize swelling, then returned the boots to his feet. He was carried

to an ambulance.

Doctors determined he recieved 2nd degree burns on

the inside and outside of both feet. Less than one percent

of his body was burned.

He later went in for a follow up appointment at a burn

care facility.

The firefighter was weating traditional leather firefighting boots. How well would some of the newer hiking style boot faired?

Walking away foom the stump, the sawyer began to feel intense pain in both feet. Blisters began developing on both sides of both feet.

  • It is difficult to predict how quickly heat will return to the ground.
  • Burn injuries are hard to assess. Utilize guidance from the Red Book.
