An object used to provide meaning to the writing beyond what is essentially being described.
repetitively using the same object to communicate a deeper meaning or use distinctions of the same object to produce an overarching mood or feeling
used in literature to provide imagery and detail to an object.
Symbolism can make a story more interesting, and provide intriguing details to the reader.
Just as the American bald eagle is often thought of as the symbol of the United States, symbols used in literature are objects used to represent other things or ideas.

Summarising Persepolis...
In 1970s Iran, Marjane 'Marji' Statrapi watches events through her young eyes and her idealistic family of a long dream being fulfilled of the hated Shah's defeat in the Iranian Revolution of 1979. However as Marji grows up, she witnesses first hand how the new Iran, now ruled by Islamic fundamentalists, has become a repressive tyranny on its own. With Marji dangerously refusing to remain silent at this injustice, her parents send her abroad to Vienna to study for a better life.
