The judicial branch can use judicial review to change laws. The judicial branch is also in charge of setting disputes. Judges appointed to the supreme court are in it for life.
Interest groups are a group of people that share a common interest. Interest groups lobby to the government. By joining an interest group you are helping get your views known to government. Interest groups use lobbyists who talk to government officials.
Good citizenship
The House of Representatives is part of Congress. There are 435 representatives. The number of representatives per state is determined by the state.
Being a good citizen includes doing your civic duties as well as voluntary actions. This means staying attentive in politics and voting as well as completing civic duties like being a part of a jury and acting as a witness. All of these things are what is expected of an American.
First Amendment Freedoms
The legislature put cotton quotas in place during the Civil War so it was illegal to grow an excess of cotton.
There are five first amendment freedoms. These include speech, press, petition, assembly, and religion. Freedom of religion means that you can believe whatever you want. Assembly means that you can gather peacefully.
Equal Protection
Thomas Jefferson said that all men are created equal. This means that no one can hold slaves, neither can they be enslaved. This also says that people cannot be discriminated against because of their race or gender.
Duties of Citizenship
Amendment Process
It's very difficult for you to add or subtract anything from the constitution. An amendment needs to be passed by both houses with two thirds vote. There have been thousands of amendments passed through Congress but only 33 have been added to the constitution.
Duties are things you are required by law to do. There are many duties of an American citizen. You are required by law to obey law, pay taxes, and serve jury. If you see a crime happen, you are required by law to serve as a witness. Men have to apply for the draft at the age of 18.
Brown vs. Board of Education
Brown vs. Board of Education made it possible for schools to get integrated. It took place in 1954. It started when the father of Linda Brown said that the all black school that Linda was going to should be equal to the all white school that white children were going to. Because of Brown vs. Board of Education, both blacks and white can have the same amount of education.
