The Riffle Sculpin

is a native fish

Its fins have spines that are like sharp needles

Riffle Sculpins are found in headwater streams with cold water and rocky or gravelly bottoms. They prefer permanent streams and water that doesn't exceed 25 to 26 degrees celsius. They also typically are found in water that is 750 to 0 meters deep.

They tend to favor places with lots of cover like rocks, logs, and overhanging banks.

North America: Pacific Slope drainages from lower Columbia River drainage in Washington to Morro Bay in California (including Sacramento-San Joaquin River drainage except upper Pit River), USA; absent in Rogue and Klamath River drainages in southern Oregon and northern California.

Riffle Sculpins live in fresh water and prefer cooler temperatures

Food

They are bottom feeders that eat things like amphipods, benthic invertebrates, fish, and various stages of caddisflies and mayflies.

The fish has a slime that it secreates as a self defence. The other self deffence is it's sharp pointy fins
