Positive Aspects of Coal

Chianna Rodriguez

Facts Continued:

The U.S. has nearly 262 billion tons of recoverable coal reserves, according to the Energy Information Administration; that's a 235-year supply at current rates of use.

Fuels like coal provides an excellent fuel for "base-load" generation because they can be burned on demand, generating electricity when it is needed. Only some hydroelectric power generation provides greater flexibility, and most renewables, including wind, solar, and wave generation provide no control over when electricity is generated.

Coal is the most affordable source of power fuel per million Btu, historically averaging less than one-quarter the price of petroleum and natural gas'.

Coal provides 56% of the electricity used in the nation each day. It provides 95% of Kentucky's electricity. Electrical rates in Kentucky are the second lowest in the nation---because of coal.

Power plants being built today emit 90 percent less pollutants (SO2, NOx, Particulates, mercury) than the plants they replace from the 1970s, according the National Energy Technology Laboratory.

All in all, there are many positive effects to using coal as an energy source. Some of these include the fact that it is much more inexpensive than several other energy sources, it provides many jobs, it is a very stable source of energy, it doesn't impact the environment very harshly, and it does not need to be imported from other countries.

Coal in Southern Nevada:

There have been many debates on whether or not coal is a good option for the city or not. 'But utilities and power plant developers say coal will be necessary to keep neon lights bright and air conditioners whirring in rapidly-growing Las Vegas as well as other parts of the desert Southwest. They say coal is an important part of their plan to provide cheap, reliable power. The plants all face several regulatory hurdles – including approval by Nevada’s Environmental Protection Division and the federal Bureau of Land Management – before construction on a new generation of coal power can begin. Together, they could power about 2.8 million average single-family homes and would produce more than 30 million tons per year of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide.'
