More about

Wakes

Attire

The most common attire is black clothing, but if white clothing is worn, it is customary to wear a black mourning pin.

Regional Customs

Different regions of the Philippines have their own different customs for the wake and mourning period. For example, in the rural region of Cavite, the deceased person is buried in a hut by a tree. The person that passed away chose the tree and area before becoming terminally ill.

Wake Decorations

Common wake decorations are funeral lights, a contribution box, a guest registry book, and flowers. At wakes, food and drinks are served for guests, but the viewers are expected to give some financial donation to help with funeral costs. There is typically entertainment such as singing, instruments, or card games.

Funeral Day and Pasiyam

On the funeral day, the coffin is either carried by the deceased’s family and friends or by a hearse. The other family members and friends follow after the deceased in a funeral march. After the entombment, religious Filipinos pray for the deceased in a custom known as pasiyam. It is believed that on the 9th day, the soul finally leaves the body. The period of mourning for the dead continues for a year after pasiyam.

Flowers

Typical Flower Choices

Flowers are used to decorate the location in which the wake is held, and they are also thrown inside the grave of the deceased. Typical flower choices are lilies, roses, and orchids. Each type of flower has a different meaning. For example, orchids symbolize passion and healing, while lilies represent ambition and nobility.

Interesting Fact

In the region of Ilongot, the deceased is buried in a seated position. Their hands are also bound to the feet, because there is a belief that these actions prevents the ghost of the person from "roaming".

Significance of Color

Flower color also has significance. Different colors imply different meanings. For example, dark reds express bountiful love, and yellows symbolize strength. Common floral arrangements for wakes include circular wreaths and sprays.

Filipinos pay homage to the deceased by holding wakes. Wakes usually last between 3 to 7 days. They can be held any day of the week, and they last most of the day. Where the wakes are held usually depends on the region in the Philippines. For example, people in urban areas typically hold their wakes at a funeral parlor, and citizens residing in the country usually hold wakes from their own homes. During the wake, the body is displayed, and members of the family and friends of the deceased come to visit the body and celebrate the departed’s life.
