The Most Ancient and Noble House of Black

  • The most notable member of the Black family is Sirius Black, godfather and friend of Harry Potter
  • However a large portion of the Black family was named after objects and elements of the night sky
  • Members of the Black family were obsessed with the notion of pure and noble blood, so it makes sense they would name most of their children based off of a connecting source such as astronomy
  • Sirius Black: Son of Orion and Walburga Black, brother of Regulus and his animagus form is a black dog called the Grim
  • Sirius: a type A star in the constellation Canis Major (dog), sky’s brightest star with apparent magnitude of -1.46 and is 8.6 light years away from Earth
  • Regulus Arcturus Black: son of Orion and Walburga Black, younger brother of Sirius, killed in the attempt to destroy Voldemort’s holcruxes
  • Regulus: the brightest star in the lion constellation (Leo), it's rapid rotation makes the shape oblate, B type star, about 77 light years away from Earth
  • Arcturus: the brightest star in the constellation of Bootes, the herdsman
  • Bellatrix Lestrange: daughter of Cygnus and Druella Black, became a death eater and killed her cousin Sirius Black and niece Nymphadora
  • Bellatrix: Orion’s third brightest star, 27th brightest star in the sky, 252 light years away from Earth with an apparent magnitude of 1.64
  • Cygnus Black III: married Druella Rosier and had three daughters (Bellatrix, Andromeda, Narcissa) and is grandfather to Draco Malfoy (Narcissa) and Nymphadora (Andromeda)
  • Cygnus: the swan constellation, brightest stars form a cross so its also known as the Northern Cross, Deneb is the brightest star in the constellation and is a white super-giant
  • Andromeda Tonks: disowned when she married muggle-born wizard Ted Tonks with whom she had their daughter Nymphadora who married Remus Lupin, Andromeda and Ted were allies of the Order of the Phoenix who were against Lord Voldemort
  • Andromeda: a spiral galaxy 780 kiloparsecs from Earth, and a constellation located on the celestial equator, the brightest star is Alpha Andromedae, a binary star
  • Pollux Black: father of Walburga, Alphard, and Cygnus Black III, grandfather of Sirius, Regulus, Narcissa, Andromeda and Bellatrix
  • Pollux: the brightest star of the Gemini constellation, 40 light years away, 1.14 apparent magnitude, yellow in color, type K star
  • Alphard Black: son of Pollux Black and Irma Crabbe, brother of Walburga and Cygnus, disowned for leaving a lot of gold to disowned nephew Sirius
  • Alphard: also known as Alpha Hydrae, the pale orange colored bright giant star dominates the serpent constellation (hydra)
  • Cassiopeia Black: sister of Pollux, Marius and Dorea, and in greek mythology Cassiopeia is a queen and Andromeda is her daughter, Andromeda Black is her grand niece
  • Cassiopeia: M shape constellation opposite of the big dipper, and Alpha Cassiopeia is the brightest star and is an orange hued giant with a magnitude of 2.2 that is 229 light years away
  • Orion Black: son of Arcturus Black III and Melania Macmillan, father of Sirius and Regulus, favored youngest son because he was a death eater
  • Orion: a constellation that contains the star Bellatrix, Betelgeuse is the brightest star and is a red supergiant, Rigel is the second brightest star and is a blue supergiant
  • Narcissa Black is the only child of Cygnus Black III who is not named after a star or celestial object
  • She continued the Black family tradition when naming her only son with Lucius Malfoy
  • Draco Malfoy: son and only child of Narcissa and Lucius Malfoy, he is a member of the Black family tree and was selected to the House of Slytherin like much of his family, was a death eater but couldn’t complete his task of killing Dumbledore and Snape completed the task, he married Astoria Greengrass and had son Scorpius Hyperion Malfoy
  • Draco: a circumpolar constellation with 5 of its stars having known planets, it is also known as Draco the Dragon but was named after the Latin term meaning huge serpent and it encompasses several faint galaxies including the Draco Dwarf galaxy
  • Scorpius Hyperion Black: son of Draco Malfoy and Astoria Greengrass, classmate of Rose Weasley (daughter of Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley) and Albus Potter (son of Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley)
  • Scorpius: Scorpius the Scorpion constellation, Antares is a red star located where the scorpion’s heart would be, and Antares is the brightest star with around a 0.96 apparent magnitude, and around 520 light years away
  • Hyperion: moon of Saturn discovered in 1848, first non round moon to be discovered, spongelike surface appearance, and it's axis of rotation wobbles so much that its orientation is unpredictable
  • Merope Gaunt: also known as Merope Riddle, Tom Marvolo Riddle aka Voldemort’s mother. Merope is the daughter of Marvolo Gaunt, sister of Morfin Gaunt
  • Merope: a blue white B type star in the constellation Taurus, member of the Pleiades star cluster, approximately 360 light years away, Merope Nebula surrounds Merope
  • Professor Aurora Sinistra: professor of astronomy at Hogwarts
  • Nu Ophiuchi (Sinistra): star in the equatorial constellation Ophiuchus
  • Luna Lovegood: daughter of Xenophilius and Pandora Lovegood, married Rolf Scamander and had twin sons, Lorcan and Lysander
  • Luna: latin for the moon, Earth’s satellite
  • Centaurs: a creature who’s head, torso and arms appear human and are joined to a horse’s body
  • Centaur objects: orbital class of minor planets, similar to asteroids in size but comets in composition, due to their half nature they were named after the mythological centaurs, Centaur is also a constellation
  • Remus Lupin: son of Lyall and Hope Lupin, becomes a werewolf during the full moon, marries Nymphadora Tonks and has a son named Teddy
  • Lupus:the wolf constellation
  • Remus: a small moon that of the main-belt asteroid 87 Sylvia, similar to the other moon Romulus, and in Roman mythology Remus and Romulus were twins that were raised by wolves
