Alabama 1930

In the 1930s most things were separate. For example:

Poverty

  • Schools
  • Public Toilets
  • Restaurants
  • Theater
  • Water Fountains
  • and many more things

However it didn't stop there. There were alot of laws for blacks that prohibited them from doing a variety of things including having a high-ranking job. The best job a black could get was to be a nurse.

Almost all blacks during this time were living in poverty. No child got to go to school and the best job an adult could get was to be a nurse. Most black 12-17 year olds got no education and had to work as brick layers or painters or other low paying jobs.

Also, interracial relationships and marriages were prohibited

Voting and Law

In the 1930s, the US constitution and federal law declared that everyone was equal. However the southern states passed the Jim Crow Laws which related to segregation. This meant that black and white people had to live seperately. They found it diffucult to vote as:

Introduction

Poll Tax - A tax had to be paid in order to be able to vote, and most black people were too poor to pay the tax,

Literacy Tests - In order to vote, you had to prove that they could read difficult extracts.

What is segregation?

The National Association of the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP) was established in 1909 to try ensure a better life for black people.

Many protests happened. By the 1930's and 1940's the NAACP tried to challenge discrimination and segregation in courts.

Segregation is the action or state of setting someone or something apart from others.

So in this case it's setting the blacks apart from the whites.
