‘Don’t do this to me mother,’ I said, ‘for I would not give up my religion for anything in the world.’
Sa` ad s mother carried out her threat… For days she neither ate nor drank. And thus her health has majorly deteriorated. Once Sa` ad went to visit his mother trying to convince her to eat, he narrates:
‘Mother! In spite of my strong love for you, my love for Allaah and His Messenger is way stronger. By Allaah , if you had a thousand souls and one soul after another were to depart, I would not abandon Islam for anything.’ When she saw that I was determined she relented unwillingly and ate and drank.”
Saad took part in many of the battles with the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. He was the first Muslim to shed the blood of a disbeliever who taunted Muslims who were praying. Saad was also the first person to shoot an arrow in the defence of Islam. Due to his bravery, Saad was put in command of many Muslim armies. He was commander-in-chief of the Muslim army in the historical Battle of Qadisiyyah when the Persian empire collapsed.
Indeed Prophet Mohammad (SallAllaahu ‘Alaihi wa Sallam) was delighted with Sad’s acceptance of Islam, but Sa`d’ s mother was not. Sa` ad narrates:
“When my mother knew that I became a Muslim, she flew into a rage. She came up to me and said:
“O Sad! What is this religion that you have joined which has taken you away from the religion of your mother and father…? Either you abandon this new religion or I would not eat or drink until I die. Your heart would be broken with grief for me and remorse would consume you on account of the deed which you have done and people would censure you forever more.’
Saad planned and established the city of Kufe (in present-day Iraq) with a Musjid in the centre, wide roads, and a large, empty space as a playground for children and soldiers’ training ground. Umar radhiallahu anhu chose Saad as one of 6 possible successors to him as Khalifah.

Saad Ibn Abi Waqqaas radhiallahu anhu was born in 578 CE and passed away in 664 CE at the age of 86. He was closely related to the Prophet(SWT) mother, Aminah. Aminah’s father was a brother of Saad radhiallahu anhu’s grandfather. Saad was one of the first people to accept Islam. By the age of 40 Saad only had one daughter. Later on he got many more children. Saad narrated 271 Hadith and often wept out of the fear of Allah (SWT). The Prophet (SAW) said he was equal to 1,000 warriors. He was blessed with a lot of wealth and was very generous.
The ten people who were given the glad tidings of Paradise were the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) who are mentioned in the hadeeth narrated by ‘Abd al-Rahmaan ibn ‘Awf, who said:
The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Abu Bakr will be in Paradise, ‘Umar will be in Paradise, ‘Uthmaan will be in Paradise, ‘Ali will be in Paradise, Talhah will be in Paradise, al-Zubayr will be in Paradise, ‘Abd al-Rahmaan ibn ‘Awf will be in Paradise, Sa’d will be in Paradise, Sa’eed will be in Paradise, and Abu ‘Ubaydah ibn al-Jarraah will be in Paradise.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 3680). Sa’d is Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqaas, and Sa’eed is Sa’eed ibn Zayd. There are also a number of other Sahaabah who were given the glad tidings of Paradise, such as Khadeejah bint Khuwaylid, ‘Abd-Allaah ibn Salaam, ‘Ukaashah ibn Muhsan and others, but the ten mentioned above are called the ten who were given the glad tidings of Paradise because their glad tidings came in one hadeeth. And Allaah knows best.
People recognize him as a serious and intelligent young man. He finds no satisfaction in the religion and way of life of his people, their corrupt beliefs and disagreeable practices. His name is Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas.
Just before his death Saad asked his children to open a box that he had always kept locked. In it was the garment he’d worn against the enemy in the Battle of Badr and he asked his children to wrap him in it and bury him. Some reports state that Saad was sent as envoy to a Chinese Emperor Gaozong in 650 CE, becoming the first Muslim in China.
These Companions are mentioned in the Noble Qur'an and Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas was one of them. He was one of those brave soldiers who took part in the Battle of Uhud and were known for their fearlessness. In this battle this experienced archer had rained his arrows on the enemy and the Prophet PBUH had been so pleased with him that he said to him
"Saa'd shoot your arrows; May my mother and father be sacrificed for you." Saa'd bin Abi Waqqas became a Muslim at the age of seventeen. He was educated and trained in the Dar e Arqam and was with the Prophet PBUH at the Shebe Abi Talib,' bearing with patience and fortitude the difficulties and hardship of the siege.
This fortunate Companion had received the glad tidings that he would go to Paradise, from the lips of the Prophet PBUH himself. He had also prayed to Allah Almighty that the supplications of Sa'd bin Abi Waqas should be answered and that his arrow should always find its mark. Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas had been a member of the group of Companion who had pledged loyalty to Allah Almighty and His Prophet PBUH at what came to be known as the Bai'at-al-Rizwan.
He is short and well-built and has a very heavy crop of hair. People compare him to a young lion. He comes from a rich and noble family. He is very attached to his parents and is particularly fond of his mother. He spends much of his time making and repairing bows and arrows and practicing archery as if preparing himself for some great encounter.
