Big Bay Dam

What We Can Learn.

Big Bay Dam was a dam that wa built in 1992 in Mississippi. It failed in 2004 becaus water levels went above the height of the dam. It was 1890 feet long and 51.3 feet high. After the dam collapsed 26 homes were destroyed and 16 were damaged. The function was to stop water from reaching into the town. The form was a solid structure and was made out of bricks and cement.

From the destruction of this dam we can create bigger better and dams that can withstand the forces of nature. Future structures can be built to certain environmental need, such as cold proof in the north and warmer near the equator. Also our technology can be improved such as stronger material for the construction of the dam and also make it last longer.

Big Bay Dam was like any other dam it was made of cement and brick and built across the Big Bay embankment. Its job was to stop water from rushing into the town and they were trying to generate some kind of hydroelectric energy. When the dam collapsed 17,500,00 meters cubed water flooded into the town. Once the dam was analyzed they found mud and scrap material. It was destroyed by exterior forces (water and wind)
