Reflection:

What is our problem, and what have we done so far to help solve it?

Tweet:

Give two points to back up your claim of which area ACME should choose to build their theme park.

Imagine: Plate Tectonics & Earthquakes

  • You are responsible for researching the following information that relates to earthquakes. After you research, you will get with your other team members for Accountable Talk.
  • Research the following information using the books at your table and my Portaportal:
  • Tectonic plate boundaries: convergent, divergent, transform (which boundary is most closely related to earthquakes?)
  • The Ring of Fire (what is it and how is it related to earthquakes?)
  • Faults (what are they and how are they related to earthquakes?)
  • Seismology, seismograph, seismic waves (what are they, how are they related to each other, and how are they related to earthquakes?)
  • The Richter Scale (what does it measure?)

Shake It Up Challenge

REVIEW

Where do earthquakes occur? How can these areas survive an earthquake? You and your team will become seismologists as you explore how earthquakes occur and the areas that are at risk for such geological catastrophes.

Challenge: ACME Theme Park has decided to go global! ACME is enlisting the aid of several scientists and engineers to determine prime locations around the world to place their theme parks. Soon, ACME will be distributing a list of locations that they feel would be excellent prospects for their park locations. Your job is to prepare a geological risk analysis for each location to determine the best areas for building the theme parks. WARNING: ACME is known for their CRAZY ideas and changing their minds in the mid-project...

  • Earth’s outer shell, or lithosphere, is not one solid piece. It’s broken up like a cracked eggshell into huge pieces (our continents) and many small pieces called tectonic plates.
  • Tectonic plates are continually moving at centimeters per year (usually 5-7 cm).
  • Tectonic Plates are pieces of the lithosphere that move around on top of the asthenosphere.

What is the relationship between this movement and earthquakes?

Essential Questions & Standards

ACME's List of Prime Locations:

EQ:

Are we able to describe the relationship between plate movements and earthquakes?

EL:

The student will describe the relationship

between plate movements and earthquakes.

Group 1: New Madrid, MO & Greenland

Group 2: Chile & Charleston, SC

Group 3: South Africa & Indonesia

Group 4: Hawaii & San Francisco, CA

Group 5: Anchorage, AK & Japan

Group 6: New Zealand & Dominican Republic

Group 7: Australia & Las Vegas, NV

Ask:

What is our problem?

How will we solve it?

Are there any limitations?

Imagine:

THINK-PAIR-SHARE

Prepare a geological risk analysis for both of your location to determine the best areas for building the theme parks.

What will your team include in the risk analysis for each location?

What information would be important to include in order to persuade ACME to build their theme park at that particular location? Remember...the more scientific or quantitative DATA you have to back up your claim the better!

*You have 5 minutes to make a plan...

**You will use the information on my portalportal under "Earthquakes".

Bell Work: 10/15/15

What is Pangaea? What is the relationship between Pangaea and tectonic plates? Use specific evidence from the informational text at your table.
