PAWS: Four parts of writing to communicate

Subject

The subject of the argument. What you are writing about.

The topic must be:

  • Clear
  • Focused

How will you maintain your focus?

Did you use an outline to organize your thoughts?

Audience

Your argument is delivered to a group of people. These may be fellow students, your family, co-workers, or any special interest group.

Writer

Ask:

How will you establish credibility?

What can you reference to do so?

The writer must establish credibility!

Writing must be:

  • Clear
  • Accurate
  • Use strong word choice
  • Grammatically correct

Logic and reason are key!

Ask:

Who is your audience?

Purpose

What are their needs? Characteristics?

Viewpoints?

How will you draw them into your view?

An argument must have a purpose:

  • To persuade
  • To explain
  • To convince others to take action

Ask:

What is your purpose?
