Brendon Urie is the lead singer and lyricist of Panic! at the Disco, of which he is the only remaining member.
Brendon Urie uses many metaphors in
his work to make comparisons that intensify the tone and help develop a theme. In "This is Gospel" Urie compares words to knives to emphasize how much damage harsh words can really cause. In "Emperor's New Clothes," by comparing death to overcoming challenges and a crown to power, he creates a more ominous and empowering tone. Finally, in "Trade Mistakes" Urie compares himself to an anchor in order to show emotional turmoil of wanting to "save" someone but feeling as though he just drags them down. This makes the song's overall theme more apparent and makes it relatable.

In the song "This is Gospel," Urie writes, "These words are knives and often leave scars."
"Emperor's New Clothes" is an extended metaphor comparing dying and obtaining "the crown" to coming back from a difficult experience and taking power for oneself.
In "Trade Mistakes" Urie writes,
"so, let me save you
Hold this rope and I'll pull you in
'Cause I am an anchor"
