Chapter 27

In this chapter we learn that it is mid October. At this point in time three odd things have happend to some of the citizens of Maycomb.

Chapter Notes

Bob Ewell acquired and lost a job from the WPA for laziness, he was back on welfare, accused Atticus of losing the job.

Someone broke into Judge Taylor’s house while he was spending his Sunday night alone in his big house reading writings of Bob Taylor as usual while his wife Mrs. Taylor attends church. Theory is that, Bob Ewell did it.

Bob Ewell verbally harassed Tom’s Wife, Helen Robinson, on her way to and back from work at Mr. Link Deas’ store each time she passes their land.

By the end of October, Maycomb was itself again, precisely same as last year and the year before except the NRA are dead and Halloween is now an organized affair.

Growing Up

Jem was now as he says “too old for Halloween”

Small town life &

Social relationships

Everyone’s well aware of what’s happening in each others lives furthermore it is proving that it is a small town.

New Character

Mrs. Taylor (wife of Judge Taylor)

Prejudice

The assumption in this chapter was that Bob Ewell broke into Judge Taylor's house. This assumption was made based on his family's reputation and the way he presents himself towards people who were involved with the trail (Atticus and Hellen Robinson)

Chapter 28

This entire chapter takes place on Halloween night.

Chapter Notes

Mrs. Merriweather had a pageant and Scout was in it.

Mrs. Merriweather blamed Scout for ruining her pageant because she had fallen asleep, presented her part of the pageant late.

Foot steps followed Jem and Scout on their way home from the pageant.

At first it was thought that Cecil Jacob was trying to scare them again so they called him out, but received no reply.

Once they reached the end of the street the mystery person began to run after them.

Scout fell to the ground after some struggle and felt around on the ground looking for Jem and found herself encountering a man that smelled like whiskey, and was unshaven. Scout made her way home and under the light of a streetlamp she saw a man carrying Jem.

After Dr. Reynolds examines Jem, he tells Scout that Jem has broken arm and some bumps on his head. Scout has some bumps on her head as well.

Heck Tate tells that he found Scouts dress, and pieces of her costume, along with the dead body ofBob Ewell. He was found lying under a tree with a knife stuck under his ribs.

New character

Dr. Reynolds, the doctor whom had been with the Finch family for a long time.

Small town life &

Social Relationships

Our point of Maycomb being a small town is further proven on the third page of chapter 28 when the author states that as Jem and Scout reach the auditorium they recognized who was there (the whole town) and who wasn't there (Atticus, the lady's who were tired from decorating, the usual outcast and shut-ins)

Growing up

Jem and Scout thought back to their old jokes about saints and hot steams and realized it had been a very long time. They both had grown up and out of those jokes.

Chapter 29

In this chapter Scout tells her story of what happened when she was going back home from the auditorium. At the end of the chapter she makes a few discoveries

Chapter Notes

Scout tells Atticus and Mr. Tate what had happened on the way back from the Auditorium.

At the end of her story, she points out the man who had carried Jem back home, whom she had never seen before.

She noticed his sickly white hands that had never seen the sun, with a face that is the same tone, cheeks that were “thin to hollowness”, his wide mouth, grey and colourless eyes as if he were blind and hair which seemed dead and thin.

From his physical treats she than realized it was Boo Radley whom brought them back home.

New Character

The real/true Arthur Radley

Prejudice

In this chapter the prejudgements, assumptions of Arthur/Boo Radley made by if not many, but the majority of Maycomb citizens was proven wrong.

Small Town Life &

Social Relationships

One who helped them while they were in trouble, it wasn't their father, it was not a random person passing the same street, and it was definitely no super hero. It was their very own neighbour – Arthur/Boo Radley.

Justice

One who did no harm to others was saved/received help from others at their time of need (Jem&Scout). One who puts others in rough circumstances for his/her well-being, did not accomplish their desire and had lost something priceless, their life.

THE END.
