Lesson 3

WRITER'S WORKSHOP

STUDY TIP SPECIAL!

Dialogue 1

A: I think the common theme of these pictures is work.

B: I agree. I think they specifically show the relationship between bosses and employees.

A: The job in picture one looks very difficult for the employees, but the boss is clean and happy.

B: Yes, it’s a big contrast to picture two, when the boss is equally dirty as his staff. What job is shown in picture three?

A:

B:

Dialogue 2

A: I think that these pictures are all about poverty, don’t you?

B: Yes, they’re quite depressing. Everyone looks very poor, and perhaps in third world countries.

A: But it’s not clear if they’re in Asia or Africa, because the people are all mixed race. There are even some European looking people in picture three.

B: On the other hand, perhaps they are all in Europe. They are perhaps slums in different European cities.

A:

B:

Both pictures show animals eating.

On the other hand, only one is in color.

Both pictures are about animals.

I think the common theme here is pet care.

In contrast, the animals in the second image look very ill.

Unlike the first photo, this looks like a happy mealtime.

Ask each other about: STUDYING

I hate wet and reiny days.

It rained a lot in 1816.... a lot - like everyday; the weather in Europe was abnormally wet because it rained in Switzerland on 130 out of the 183 days from April to September. If I was Mary Shelley I might decide to write a book too. Afterall, it was the onnly thing you could do without TV or anything. She said that she "passed the summer of 1816 in the environs of Geneva...we occasionally amused ourselves with some German stories of ghosts... These tales excited in us a playful desire of imitation" So, people were stuck inside and bored. Mary Shelley decided to write a book becuase it was so awful outside. I can totally see her point, you know? I guess I would write a novel if there was nothing else to do.

- Does studying only happen at school?

- What’s the most fun you’ve had while studying?

- Do you like studying English?

- How has the Internet changed studying?

- Do you think people in different countries study in the same way as you?

- What advice would you give someone on how to study English?

Canada is one of the best countries in the world to live in. First, Canada has an excellent health care system. All Canadians have access to medical services at a reasonable price. Second, Canada has a high standard of education. Students are taught by well‐trained teachers and are encouraged to continue studying at university. Finally, Canada's cities are clean and efficiently managed. Canadian cities have many parks and lots of space for people to live. As a result, Canada is a desirable place to live.

Read all the words, then choose 10 words to learn

Remember, we learn better and faster things we really want to learn. Manage your time. In order to manage your time successfully, having an awareness of what your goals are will assist you in prioritizing your activities. Time management provides you with the opportunity to create a schedule that works for you, not for others. This personal touch gives you the flexibility to include the things that are most important to you. Set a reward for yourself. Set a reward for yourself that you can look forward to. For example, when you reach a goal, give yourself a reward: Watch a movie. Have a delicious snack. Meet your friends. Go to the café.

I’ll have to make some shopping after work.

He always does the same mistakes.

He made a resume of the novel for me, but I lost it. John has made a superb sailboard.

2 Do vyjadřuje činnost blíže neurčenou, míněnou obecně.What are you planning to do this summer? I’ll have to do something about my French or else I’ll fail.

3 Sloveso do používáme, když mluvíme o nějaké (pracovní) činnosti. I’ll have to do some shopping after work. Have you done your homework yet? – No. Mum told me to do the washing-up first.

4 V ostatních případech neexistují bohužel přesná pravidla – vládne v nich idiomatika. He always makes the same mistakes.
