The two men were fishing and the Prussians come up behind them and say their spies disguised as fishermen. The commander started interrogating them because they passed a outpost and he said they must have a password to return.

The exposition is before this short story. It explains the background and the setting.

Saurage and Morissot are both flat characters. They did not show much of their characters till the

end of the story.

The two main characters bumped in to each other and went to the bar. Then later on Morissot said they should go fishing. They had always gotten along in till today the two men had a disagreement about government. Meanwhile the Prussians were attacking.

The minute passed by and neither men told the password so they were both shot. Then the commander ordered they be tied to stones and sunk to the bottom of the bank.

The story opens in Paris in January 1871. Starts off with introducing the main characters Monsieur Morissot and Sauvage. Morissot is a watchmaker and they both have just enrolled in the national guard.
