*People that lived on the east coast supported their area's rap scene (East Coast Rap).

A

* The gang behind the East Coast rap scene were the Crips, Notorious B.I.G.'s crew (East Coast Crips).

* I believe that the West Coast rap scene was more right in the sense that they did deserve to be part of the hip hop community, the East Coast didn't "own" it. The East Coast was very arrogant in the beginning of their conflict as far as artists recording songs like, "F*** Compton" recorded by Tim Dog, intentionally dissing the West Coast artist, Dr. Dre. Things like this, and the other unnecessary things that the East Coast did to "claim" that hip hop in the West Coast wasn't allowed, is why I believe that the West Coast was right in their responses to the East's shenanigans. (Rolling Stone)

* Other well known supporters of the East Coast rap scene were Sean "Puffy" Combs, Jay-Z, LL Cool J, and 50 Cent (East Coast Rap).

East Coast vs West Coast Background Info

*The killing of Tupac "2Pac" Shakur on September 13, 1996 followed years of conflict involving Shakur, rapper Notorious B.I.G.. thier record companies, and thier gang followers. (Anthony Bruno)

*Christopher Wallace, Notorious B.I.G., was later shot by a still unknown killer on March 9, 1997 in Los Angeles. (D. L. Chandler)

*From late 1995 into early 1996, 2Pac would appear on numerous tracks aiming threatening and/or antagonistic slants at the Notorious B.I.G., Bad Boy as a label, and anyone affiliated with them. During this time, althought B.I.G. never directly responded, the media beame heavily involved and dubbed the rivalry a "coastal rap war, " reporting on it continuously. This caused fans from both scenes to take sides with one set of artists or another. (Anthony Bruno)

West Coast Hip Hop Supporters

*People that live on the west coast supported their side of the rap scene (West Coast Rap).

*The gang behind the West Coast rap scene were the Bloods. Most of the rappers affiliated with the West Coast were in this gang (Bloods).

*Other well known supporters include Ice Cube, Dr.Dre, and Snoop Dog (West Coast Rap).

East Coast vs West Coast Background Info

*Later, things escalated when Knight attended a party for producer Jermaine Dupri in Atlanta. During the bash, a close friend of Suge's was fatally shot outside. Knight accused Combs--who was also in attendence--of having something to do with the shooting (Anthony Bruno).

*In spring 1996, the music video for 2Pac's song, "2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted" began with a lampooning of Biggie and Combs, in which 2Pac and his guards pull pistols from their jackets ready to shoot them as the song intro begins. That summer, 2Pac continues his antagonism toward Biggie with the infamous track "Hit 'Em Up," in which he claimed to have had sex with the Notorious B.I.G's wife, singer Faith Evans, and proceeded to threaten the lives of Biggie and Puffy. The song's brutal content was viewed by many as Shakur having gone too far, and taking the feud to another level. (Anthony Bruno)

  • East Coast vs West Coast Background Info

*Bad Boy Records CEO Sean Combs was in many of his rappers' music videos (Anthony Bruno).

*Later that year, Knight signed Tupac "2pac" Shakur. Shortly after the rapper's release in October of 1995, he proceeded to join Knight in openly slandering Bad Boy Records, and the East Coast hip hop scene in general (Anthony Bruno).

East Coast Hip Hop Basic Info

* East Coast hip-hop emerged in the 1970's on the gritty streets of South Bronx (William C. Gibbons).

* All of rap's most important early artists were based in the New York City area, signed to Bad Boy Records (East Coast Rap).

East Coast vs West Coast Background Info

* In the 80's, East Coast rap became a music intended more for intense listening than for the dance floor, helping develop the genre into a respected art form as it grew more elaborate and complex (East Coast Rap).

*Death Row Records CEO Suge Knight mocked Sean at the 1995 Source Awards in New York (Anthony Bruno).

East Coast vs. West Coast

West Coast Hip Hop Basic Info

*West Coast rap dominated the hip-hop scene for the middle section of the 90's, making gangsta rap into a popular phenomenon with Death Row Records (West Coast Rap).

Basic Info on conflict

*Perhaps most prevalent in the 90’s, although still popular today, West Coast music came to define the use of bass in hip hop. Led by Dr. Dre’s innovations in the studio with using synthesizer lines on top of rolling bass lines, West Coast songs like “California Love” illustrate the West Coast’s style to the fullest. (West Coast Rap)

*The rivalry started in the 90's when the popularity of the West Coast rap scene started to grow and some East Coast rappers became angry (Anthony Bruno).

*Up until the mid- to late 80's, West Coast rap mostly imitated East Coast party rap, already considered old-school in its place of origin; however, both Los Angeles and the Bay Area soon proved to be fertile pastures (West Coast Rap).

*The two record labels involved were Bad Boy records in New York ran by CEO Sean "Puffy" Combs and Death Row records in Los Angeles, ran by CEO Suge Knight (Anthony Bruno).

*It ended with East Coast rapper Christopher Wallace "Notorious B.I.G." and West Coast rapper Tupac Shakur "2Pac" being brutally murdered (Anthony Bruno).
