There are several activators which activate redstone.

Redstone is supposed to be a "wire" that can activate different blocks/machines. Although without a "redstone repeater" it will run out of activation after 15 blocks.

Redstone can be either a mineral in the ground of Minecraft, or a powerful wire system. If you aren't sure what redstone looks like, it's dark red with shiny specs of bright red.
Command Blocks
Command blocks are a very interesting block that is only in creative mode, and cannot be crafted. The ID for a Command Block is: "137" (for 1.7) and/or "command_block" (for 1.8 and above).
If you click these amazing blocks it will open up a small command window. There you can tell the command block, when activated, to do that command. There are 3-4 variables for the command block, depending on your game version. "@p" (nearest player), "@a" (all players), @r (random player), and @e (all entities).
