.........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

List as many props as you can from Nutcracker!

Matthew Bourne uses MUSIC VISUALISATION (he listens to the music and imagines the dance) AND DIRECT CORRELATION (P94/95). What is Direct Correlation? (1mark)

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………........................................................................

DESCRIBE a scene/section from Nutcracker! that clearly shows him using direct correlation. (5marks) Make sure you describe the movement and how it relates to the music.

............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

This relates to the sound used to accompany a dance and can include music, drumming, everyday or natural sound and the voice.

Silence

  • Dances can be sometimes be performed without accompaniment, but very rarely in complete silence.
  • Audiences in this case would hear the dancers breathing and moving = AUDIBLE ASPECTS of the dancer.
  • Silence can add to the theme of the dance, add contrast and highlight moments of greatness.

Style: Describes a particular technique that has specific rhythm or sound.

Tone: Characteristics of sound that relate to its pitch, strength or quality.

Rhythm: Repeated pattern of movements or sounds.

Pulse: A strong regular beat or series of beats.

Pitch: Frequency of a note - High/low

Climax: important or exciting moment in music, tells the audience something important is about to happen.

Intensity: Extreme force, degree or amount; helps to create tension.

Instrumentation: Arrangement of instruments used.

Natural Sound

Found Sounds

Soundscape = Atmosphere or environment created by or with sound

When thinking about accompaniment for a dance work the following features can be considered:

  • Style
  • Tone
  • Timbre
  • Texture
  • Rhythm

These are sounds that come from nature = SOUNDSCAPES.

E.g. City noises or birds chirping

These sounds create mood or help the audience understand the theme of the dance.

These are sounds created by everyday objects that can be used to enhance the meaning of the dance.

E.g. Gun sound in the orphanage.

Accompaniment contribution....

  • Pitch
  • Climax
  • Intensity
  • Instrumentation
  • Pulse

Enhances the dynamics of the actions

Sets the mood/scene

Suggests location

Adds structure

Direct correlation

Music and dance work together. In traditional ballets such as Swan lake, Tchaikovsky composed the music to fit directly with each action.

Music Visualisation

The music controls the movement, style, mood, rhythm, dynamics and length of the dance – George Balanchine said : ‘Hear the dance, see the music’

Mutual co -existence

Music used as a backdrop to the dance and help create the desired atmosphere, they do not rely on each other but do share some similarities.

Disassociation

Dance is developed without the music and then the music is put in afterwards, sometimes the dancers only hear the music during their first performance. Musical and dance are totally separate, deliberately goes against the dance.
