His story

He was stationed in Idonesesia with the British Army during World War II. Here it wasn't the Germans who were the source of fear, it was the Japanese.

An attempt to escape

Japanese Capture

It became clear they would need to escape, he was one of five men to volunteer to make a break for the Jungle. Eventually, they came across a village.

The Japanese took over the hospital a few days later. He was sent to a camp in which he suffered under horrible conditions and contracted Yellow Jaundice and Dysentery. Due to him being ill, when he was chosen to be sent out to the Islands to work on the Burma Railroad, he was sent to the 'hospital' instead.

The plantation

The hospital

He was treated in the hospital, and sanitation there was a large improvement on the camp, but it was still treated like a prison by the Japanese. The dutch Lieutenant in charge there knew that Charles was trained in medicine, and took him under his wing. He worked in the hospital from then on.

Liberation

Charles was liberated after being in the camp for two and a half years. Lord and Lady Mountbatten came to the camp to announce that the Japanese had surrendered and that they would be transported to Singapore. He was taken to the Seaview Hotel, which had been made into a Red Cross base and stayed there for four weeks, by which time he was healthy enough to be sent home by troop ship. He was given a new uniform with his rank and war ribbons sewn on, and was sent home to his family. His name was also mentioned in Despatches for his services in the War Camp. This is a very high honour for him.

It was owned by a Scottish man and his wife, who provided them with room for the night. The next morning they were sent with guides back into the jungle.
