Civil Rights Movement

The Chicano's gave the Mexican American population a sense of urnist growth.The Latino community had almost no influence in National Political Arena. Though John F. Kennedy gave the Latino community a significant voting block. Also Rodolfo "Corky" Gonzales defined the Chicano's through his fantastic poem called "I am Joaquin"

There were three gains from the Civil Rights Movement:

  • Racial Equality

  • Right to vote

  • Desegregation

During the Vietnam War, Mexican American's were fighting for civil rights in the 1960's. The Chicano Movement started in New Mexico with Reies Lopez Tijerina. WIth the help of a couple major legal victories the Chicanos fight for reform began. The legal victories were Mendez v. Westminster (1947), Brown v. Board of Education (1954), and Hernandez v. Texans (1954)

The 1950's Civil Rights Movement was geared towards giving African-American's civil rights and to other racial groups. One of the most remembered Civil Rights Leaders is Martin Luther King, Jr. Civil Rights Movement inspired many other religious groups to fight for their civil rights as well.

The Chincano Movement and The Movement were geared toward different reasons but they did had some similarities between them.
