Management

Erosion

  • Buffer placed around the bay to reduce erosion (no effect)- steady plant loss continues
  • Buffer more suited to agricultural type of land
  • Reintroduction of vegetation is necessary (e.g. spinifex)- strengthens sand and stabilizes dunes

Site and Location

  • Cairns is located in the coastal area of far North Queensland.

Changes and Impacts

  • Regional city with many natural features including beautiful beaches, rainforests, and is regarded as the entrance to the Great Barrier Reef.

Biophysical- Great Barrier Reef

  • Fishing
  • Anchoring
  • Natural barrier against most strong ocean and sea waves
  • Pollution
  • Tourist/local Activities

Biophysical

Lithosphere

  • Tropical cyclones, flooding and destructive waves cause erosion along the coast
  • Long shore drift is only an issue on Bramston Beach

Biosphere

Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority

  • Beach vegetation, rainforests, Great Barrier Reef, urban parks and walking tracks

Stakeholder

  • Discourages people taking coral
  • Anchoring must be done in sandy areas away from coral

Process

  • Encourage that tourist organizations use moorings or platoons rather than anchoring in the coral reefs, by enforcing mooring rules

Biophysical

Long shore Drift

Atmosphere

Issue

Causes of long shore drift:

  • wave and current action
  • prevailing winds
  • Tropical climate experiences both monsoon (wet) and dry season

Long shore Drift

Influences:

  • wind
  • shallow waters near the shore

  • Transport of sand and pebbles along the coast
  • Occurs in the littoral (shore) zone, swash zone and in/or close to the surf zone
  • Solely effects Bramston Beach

Monsoon season causes higher

  • Temperatures
  • Precipitation (rainfall)
  • Humidity (moisture in the air)
  • Air pressure (weight of the air)
  • Speed and direction of wind

Management

Long shore Drift

Stakeholders

  • Groyne; low wall built at right angles to prevent materials from being transported away by the long shore drift
  • Traps sediment- reduces coastal erosion
  • Leads to soil erosion
  • Tourism Australia
  • Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organizations
  • Cairns Private Hospital
  • Royal Flying Doctor Service
  • Local Government
  • James Cook University
  • Advance Cairns (Chamber of Commerce)
  • Queensland Government
  • Local Government
  • Cairns Regional Council
  • Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority
  • Australian Government

Issue

Erosion

  • The wearing away of soil and rock by wind and water
  • Occurs through the action of currents and waves but sea level (tidal) change

Biophysical

Atmosphere

The dry season is the best time to visit with calmer/lower

  • Temperatures (average cool temp.)
  • Precipitation (rainfall)
  • Humidity (moisture in the air)
  • Air pressure (weight of the air)
  • Speed and direction of wind

Council Strategies

  • Monsoon season (erosion, long shore drift) impacts: Sand nourishment

Assessment Overview

  • Thorough and specific coastal management strategies
  • Countless examples of successful coastal management
  • Plans and knowledge useful for creating a more sustainable future
