Algeria

Arab Uprising

What specific things do the protestors want changed?

Who was the leader and why did protestors want him removed?

Algerian society remains deeply unequal and ridden by corruption. The weakness of the political parties in the opposition should not hide the fact that Algerians are extremely politicized. Protests in Algeria took place in 2010, where protestors have demanded a regime change, as well as solutions to problems with unemployment, corruption, restrictions of freedom of speech, and poor living conditions. During the Libyan civil war, he refused to allow coalition aircraft to pass through Algerian airspace.

Where is Algeria?

Abdelaziz Bouteflika is the leader of Algeria that protesters want removed. He restricted imports, hurting some well-connected businesses. He put loyalists in key posts and gave the "illusion of reforms" without creating any change in the country.

Algeria is located in the far north of Africa.

Located in the fertile coastal plain of North Africa, Algeria served as a transit region for people migrating to Europe and the Middle East.
