MAJOR POWERS

The major powers were the european countries of Austria-Hungary, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, and Russia.

THE ALLIANCES

Triple entente- Britain, France, and Russia

Triple alliance- Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy

LONG TERM REASONS

FROMS OF RIVALRY

Rivalries existed in the ares of trade, colonial possesions, the size and strength of armies and navies, and power as an individual nation.

TRADE

Major powers like Britain, France, Russia, Germany, Austria- Hungary, and Italy, competed to gain access to raw materials such as gold and diamonds in areas outside Europe to increase trading opportunities. This made them compete for the control of territory and resources in Africa. Soon they made weapons and ships to protect their interests.

FRANCE AND GERMANY

France and germany were already involved in the franco-prussian war. At the end of 1871 France lost Alsace and Lorraine to German forces so France had always wanted an excuse to fight Germany for their land back.

SIZE AND STRENGTH OF ARMIES

The bigger your empire was, the more power you had. So Germany, trying to protect its resources, started to build up their army and create more weapons. This lead to the other major powers also building up their armies. By the end of this, Britain had the most powerful and equiped army, though there wasn't very many people. All their money went to the navy, because the only way to travel in and out of Britain was by ship. Britain had the largest navy force in 1900 and it was said that whoever rules the waves could rule the world. But still Britain was worried about the growing size of the German navy.
