Dramatic Elements

and Structure

-Much like a narrative, a drama or play follows a plot line.

-Each part of the plot line is essential to the story to the play is telling including characters, setting, and CONFLICT.

-Dramatic structure is how a play is written. It is different than how a short story, poem, or novel is written.

-In a play dialogue is talking that happens between two or more characters. Monologue is the speaking of one character.

-Stage directions are parts of the script that tell the actors what to do.

-These three things move the action of the play forward.

- Conflict is a struggle between opposing forces and it's one of the major drivers of action in a drama.

- There are several types of conflict including:

-Man vs man: Such as an argument between two people.

-Man vs self: Such as a character deciding if they should cheat on a test.

-Man vs nature: Like building a dam to stop the flow of water.

Dramatic Analysis with the Twilight Zone

What is Set?

-The Twilight Zone was a show that aired from 1959-1964 (during the time of the baby boomers).

-The show was somewhat spooky but always had an overall theme or message it was trying to convey.

-We will be watching several episodes of this show and analyzing dramatic structure and elements.

-Today we will watch "Walking Distance" and analyze different pieces of dramatic structure.

- Set is the construction on stage (or in a film/television) show that suggests the time and place of the action. Scenery is another word for set.

What is it and how does it move a play (story) forward?

- By implementing these pieces of structure a complete story can be told through drama.

-A drama is different than a narrative or novel.

-A drama is written in dialogue form, meaning that when a character says something it appears after a character's name. Stage directions are also included either in italics or parentheses.

What are Costumes?

- A costume is clothing used by an actor to make their character more believable in a play, television show, or film.
