STAIR CLIMB WITH HIGH RISE PACK - TRAINING

HOSE HOIST - OVERVIEW (2nd Event)

COMBAT CHALLENGE VIDEO

  • Use a weighted tire(175lbs), sleigh or duffle bag and tie a short handle to it
  • Drag the weight by the handle 100ft backwards, turn around and bring it back
  • Rest for 2-3mins and repeat 4x
  • Hydrate during rests
  • Using rocks or sand fill a backpack to a weight of 50lbs. Then apply two ankle weights of 10-15lbs for a total weight of 70-80lbs. This will simulate the weight of FF bunker gear 66-77lbs
  • Next a hose pack weighing 42lbs must be assembled
  • Once all weight has been incorporated, climb 6 flights of stairs(10 steps/per) to do this climb stairs up and down twice. Rest 10mins and repeat 2X more
  • Hydrate during rest periods
  • Practice running around obstacles 15ft apart as this skill will be tested before staring the hose advance
  • Using a hand over hand motion, the competitor must pull up a 42lb hose roll and place in into the box at the top of the 5 story building.
  • It is a large diameter donut roll.
  • Disqualification can result if the competitor loses control hoisting the hose, or lets it slip down a story.

THE 5 MAIN EVENTS IN THE COMBAT CHALLENGE

STAIR CLIMB WITH HIGH RISE PACK - OVERVIEW (1st event)

  • Using a 50lb backpack, tie a long rope to the handle and lower down the centre of a scissor staircase or equivalent to 6 stories
  • Once the weight is at the bottom use hand over hand method to raise the pack as fast as you can lower the pack using the same motion quickly raise and lower it again. Rest for 2-3mins and repeat 4x
  • Hydrate during rest times
  • This challenge consists of a 42lb hose that must be carried up 6 flights of stairs.
  • This activity replicates a five story building where water is needed at the top.
  • There are 6 sets of stairs, each with 10 steps. The Firefighter must travel up all 6 flights with the hose and place it in a container box at the top story.
  • Once the hose is in the box, the Firefighter can proceed back down the stairwell touching every step.
  • Penalties are enforced if there is a missed step, and a 2 second time addition for every time they touch the handrail.
  • Disqualification can occur if the hose comes off or slides out of the container at the top of the stairway.

  • Simulates a Firefighter removing a victim from a fire as quickly as possible before injury or death.
  • A 175lb mannequin must be picked up from the ground, and dragged backwards 100 ft.
  • Must grab the mannequin from behind with their arms beneath the mannequins arms and chest.
  • Time ends once the mannequin crosses the 100ft line.
  • This concludes the Challenge Course, and time is stopped.

  • World record for co-ed tandem: 1:25.91 Trevor Fera, Amber Bowman, 2012
  • World record for male tandem: 1:12.66, Brandon Cunningham, Anthony McMurtry, 2008.
  • World record for female tandem: 1:54.32, Stacey Billapando, Jessica Morehouse, 2009
  • World record for male relay: 1:07.74, Lawrence Adams, Brad Bailey, Michael Ballisty, Jimmy Barbee, Danny Hardegree, 2010

  • Use a weighted tire(total of 60-80lbs), old sleigh or backpack. Tie 5-6ft of rope to it
  • Set up the sleigh 140ft in front of you. Sprint to the sleigh, pick up the rope, put it over your shoulder and drag 75ft
  • Next turn the sleigh around and drag it back
  • Rest for 10mins and repeat 2x more
  • Hydrate during rests
  • Simulates a Firefighter breaking down a door or wall.
  • KEISER FORCE MACHINE is what is used during this event.
  • The competitor stands over a 160lb beam and slams a 9lb sledgehammer at the beam until it moves 5 feet.
  • The competitor must keep hands below a marked line on the sledgehammer, and only the head of the hammer can make contact with the beam.
  • The competitor receives a warning if the handle of the sledgehammer strikes the beam.
  • Pushing and raking the beam can result in disqualification.

Hose Advance

(4th Event)

  • All firefighters, both currently employed or retired, are eligible to compete in the challenge.
  • All participants must compete with serviceable bunker gear in compliance with NFPA 1971.
  • Participants can compete in individual, team, tandem or relay competitions.
  • Use and old car tire with added weight(total 160lbs) if Keiser Force is not available, and a 9lb sledge hammer with a tape mark 12" back from head
  • Stand over tire so that it is behind you and strike it 15 times with high force.
  • Rest 2-3mins and repeat 4x
  • Hydrate during rests
  • World record for men individual: 1:19.02, Bob Russel, 2001
  • World record for women individual: 1:48.41, Juliet Draper, 2006
  • World record for Team: 4:19.33, Brad Roe, Garrett Venters, Derek Mullins, Randy Thorpe, Robert Hanneman, 2001
  • Simulates a Firefighter running from an engine truck to a close fire.
  • The competitor sprints 140 feet, and picks up a pressurized hose line with water.
  • Once the competitor has the hose, they sprint an additional 5 feet, then drags it another 75 feet.
  • Once at the 75ft line, the competitor opens the nozzle and sprays at a small target.
  • They then close the nozzle and placed the hose on the ground, completing the event.
  • Penalties will be enforced if the nozzle is opened before entering the swinging doors.
