How The book was written

The author: Gary Paulsen, does a very good job describing the characters. He is descriptive when explaining how they look, what moods they are in, and even in their body types. In this story we see John go threw many changes in becoming a man and becoming very independent, he goes from a boy given a man"s task, to a man using his own ingenuity and skills to survive stranded on the top of a mountain with nobody else but thousands of sheep.

The Flood

This book was very simple and easy to follow. Gary Paulsen takes you through the life of John day by day as he readies himself for the journey he must take. He then shows his struggle of trying to take care of the herd and all the complications that he faces.

Gary Paulsen uses suspense and a lot of imagery in this story. He is very descriptive when he tells about the violent storm keeping John pinned down. " The gushing waters sweeping away supplies and rations. The violent winds shoving the trees down out of it's way."

During the time that John was up watching the sheep a terrible storm blew in and made him take shelter with the wind and rain pinning him down on top of the mountain. The storm caused a flash flood next to his camp washing his supplies away and leaving him stranded, putting himself the sheep"s lives and his family"s livelihood at stake.

Summary

The Haymeadow

Fourteen-year-old John Barron is asked, like his father and grandfather before him, to spend the summer taking care of their sheep in the haymeadow. Six thousand sheep. John will be alone, except for two horses, four dogs, and all those sheep.

John doesn't feel up to the task, but he hopes that if he can accomplish it, he will finally please his father. But John finds that the adage "things just to sheep" is true when the river floods, coyotes attack, and one dog's feet get cut. Through it all he must rely on his own resourcefulness, ingenuity, and talents to survive this summer in the haymeadow.
