During the Civil War, they had much more advanced technology than was available during the Revolutionary War.
This included the telegraph, many railroads, rifles, etc. This made the battles much more efficient, and resulted in many more dead.
In the Revolutionary War, they only had muskets and had to be quite close to shoot, couldn't shoot quickly, and had to be relatively close together to kill each other, this resulted in fewer deaths.
In the Civil War, the Union had rifles and minie bullets which made them able to fire faster and for longer distances, more accurately. The south had rifles and muskets and some minie bullets, however fewer than the Union had.
During the Civil War, the North ruled the waters. This was due to the North having a much larger Navy and Ironclads to defend the rivers, this made the South very vulnerable and made them take many casualties, in comparison with prior wars.
In the Revolutionary War, the British had a superior navy and controlled the water, however could be taken down easily unlike the Ironclads in the Civil War.
