Plot Overview

Tris Prior makes a choice that surprises everyone at the society's choosing ceremony. At the ceremony, every 16 year old must choose one of the five factions based on their aptitude tests. Tris chooses to switch to dauntless from Abnegation. Tris and her new fellow dauntless-members have to live through a highly competitive initiation process to become an official dauntless member. They must undergo extreme physical and intense psychological tests, that transform them all. But Tris has a secret that she is Divergent, which means she doesn't fit into any one factions, but instead three factions. If anyone knew, it would mean a certain death. As the novel continues she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society. She also develops a romantic relationship wit her leader, Four. The novel ends with a large rebellion led by the Erudite. The plot continues over the next books of the series: Insurgent, and Allegiant.

Al

Albert is a transfer from Candor, Albert is a weak boy with a hopeless crush on Tris.

Tori

Tori is the tattoo artist of the Dauntless compound. She is said to have transferred from Erudite into Dauntless with her brother. She administered and oversaw Tris’ aptitude test. Tori is also the one to tell Tris that she is Divergent.

Jeanine Matthews

Jeanine is the leader of Erudite because of her very high IQ. Jeanine writes articles packed with lies about Abnegation simply because she hates that all members of the parliament come from Abnegation. Jeanine becomes a major player when she partners with Eric to develop a serum with the sole aim to destroy all of Abnegation.

Will

Will is originally from Erudite, which makes him both strong and clever. He eventually develops a relationship with Christina.

Eric

Main Characters

Beatrice (Tris) Prior

Eric is the primary antagonist; brutal, cruel, and murderous. Eric plans to take over as the Dauntless leader.

Tris comes from Abnegation, a faction devoted entirely to selflessness. But Tris desires a better, more exciting life for herself and during Choosing Day she makes a difficult decision. Turning from her family and the only lifestyle she’s ever known, Tris makes a startling choice when she chooses Dauntless, the brave.

Caleb Prior

Christina

Caleb is the brother to Tris, son of Andrew and Natalie. Caleb once displayed himself as the true form of Abnegation. His transfer to Erudite shocked his entire family and almost caused Tris to back out of her decision for fear of destroying their family. Caleb is asked by Tris to investigate Jeanine.

Christina is originally from Candor. Christina is Tris’ first and best friend throughout Dauntless initiation.

Four (Tobias Eaton)

Four is a very mysterious and dark character. He is eighteen years old and ranks first within the Dauntless’ trainers. At times he seems almost cruel and tyrnat-like. Tris quickly learns that Four is stronger than anyone she’s ever known and a romance begins between the two.

Setting

Divergent takes place in a futuristic Chicago; however, it isn't until the final book within the trilogy that the city's name is revealed. Throughout the novel they reference Chicago's famous landmarks like the Hancock building, Michigan Ave, and the Navy Pier. In the novel the city is surrounded by a large, barbed wired fence, but few members of the society question the reasoning for the fence. The post-modern society has also been divided into five factions and has some communist aspects.
