The community's reaction to finding a witch

The community was afraid of what the witches could become. No one knew what the witches were truly capable of, so they reacted quickly by simply killing them.

What caused witch hunts?

Recognizing witches

Witch hunts were caused by the Puritans sensitivity to "evil".

Witches were considered social misfits, and were sinners. With the community's fear of what witches could become, witch hunting became a profitable business.

Witches could be found practicing medicine on the countryside. When people had suspicions that someone was a witch, they would use pins to find places on the body where a witch was supposed not to feel pain.

The people who were likely to be witches

"Wise women" who were knowledgeable about medical plants and treatments for illness were likely to be witches. Also, women who did not marry, and maybe even owned a pet were seen as social misfits.
