April 7-12, 1939

Brief military campaign against

the Albanian Kingdom as a result

of Mussolini's imperialist policy

Strategic Importance

-Mineral resources

-Entry to Adriatic Sea

-Seized by Italy in WWI, although they were forced out in the Battle of Vlora in 1920

-Mussolini wanted to compensate for the previous failure

Leading up to Invasion

Italy entered the Albanian economy in 1925, when Albania permitted them to use their mineral resources

Italy subsidized the government and economy, trained the military, and encouraged colonisation

King Zog I would not capitulate

He refused to renew the treaties in 1931

Rome delivered an ultimatum in late March of 1939 which Tirana did not accept

The Attack

With a force of 100,000 men and 600 airplanes against Albania's badly trained 15,000 Italy simultaneously attacked all port cities on April 7th, 1939.

King Zog planned to attack from the mountains, but Italian spies disabled the artillery units

All the ports were taken by Italy

in a matter of hours, although

small groups of Albanian troops

kept fighting

King Zog and his family fled

on the first day of fighting

Italian troops captured the capital on the 8th

April 12th

The Albanian Parliament voted to depose Zog

and gave the crown to Victor Emmanuel III

Aftermath

Albania immediately withdrew

from the League of Nations

Followed Italy in to war in 1940

Served as the base of the Italian

invasion of Greece in 1940

Italy was feeling pressure from Germany, which had already annexed Austria and was moving against Czechoslovakia
