Trackballs

Made up of a ball that sits within a holder that can be rotated in order to move the cursor.

Used as an alternative to a mouse, particularly by those with limited mobility.

Accessibility Devices

Braille & Large Key Keyboards

Braille keyboards use braille characters on each key of the keyboard.

Large key keyboards are keyboards with larger sized keys for typing.

Both these devices improve accessibility for users with a visual impairment.

Braille Embossers

A printer that will output using braille cells as apposed to standard ink text.

This allows people with visual impairments to access the hard copies of their work.

Touchscreens

Often easier for selecting items on screen than using a mouse for users with limited mobility.

Also helpful for those with visual impairments as you can resize and change colouring of onscreen elements.

Many people, such as those with physical disabilities, require an alternative method of input & output to access a computer.

Examples include:

  • Trackballs
  • Braille & Large Key Keyboards
  • Touchscreens
  • Braille Embossers
  • Screen Magnifiers
  • Eye Typers

Screen Magnifiers

This usually attaches to an existing monitor and magnifies the display output to make it easier to see.

This is useful for users with a visual impairment.

Eye Typers

Uses a camera that tracks the users eye movement to detect where they are looking to enter data with an onscreen keyboard.

This is used by people with such significant mobility difficulties that they cannot use a keyboard/mouse/trackball.

Data Processing

An individual entering data into the computer themselves, usually by typing on a keyboard.

Examples include:

  • Entering customer booking details.
  • Marking exam papers or coursework.
  • Inputting responses to a survey.

When entering and processing data in a computer system, it can be handled manually or automatically.

Automatic data processing helps prevent human error & saves money as less staff are required.

Automatic

Automatic data processing taking away the role of data entry from individual users.

Examples include:

  • OMR used to enter lottery tickets.
  • Barcode readers for inputting products.
  • Smart readers for tracking energy use.
  • RFID used to monitor stock.
