Characteristics of a dystopian society.

Propaganda is used to control the citizens of society.

• Information, independent thought, and freedom are restricted.

• A figurehead or concept is worshipped by the citizens of the society.

• Citizens are perceived to be under constant surveillance.

• Citizens have a fear of the outside world.

• The natural world is banished and distrusted.

• Citizens conform to uniform expectations. Individuality and dissent are bad.

• The society is an illusion of a perfect utopian world.

Dystopia vs. Utopia

Dystopia usually has a warning message. It makes use of big government control. For example, the war in the sky in Fahrenheit 451.

Dystopia = inequality

Utopia has a hopeful message. The society is optimistic and the government works together for the "greater good."

Utopia = equality

How would you feel?

What if you were told by the government that you are not allowed to watch TV or play any video games for a whole year.

What effect would this have on you? How would your life change?

What is dystopia or dystopian society?

This means that society is controlled on the same belief and aspect that everything has to run according to plan and follow a set of rules.

  • A futuristic imagined universe in which societal control and the illusion of a perfect society are maintained through corporate, moral, technological, or totalitarian control.

  • What does THAT mean???????

Yes, we do have laws in today's society, however they are not as strict as telling us if we are allowed to read or watch TV. Our society today has a major advantage to that of totalitarian control.

You can see from the picture uptopia presents a bright society with colors or growth where a dystopian society presents a darker image with colors of destruction.

Ray Bradbury is writing as a warning to the future. His book is telling us to not underestimate the power of books and the knowledge they bring.
