The rice race

Can sound move objects?

Preparation

Purpose

In my experiment I plan to study about the sound because I want to see if the sound wave can cause a movement of the object.

Research

Through my research, I already know that the sound can cause a movement of objects.

Hypothesis

I predict that sound can move some objects because I read my research.

Finally

Analysis

  • The grain moves while there are some sounds produced in the cup;
  • Some sounds doesn't seem to have effect;
  • Blow through the tube doesn't move the grain.

Conclusion

Luana Miranda Peixoto

The hypothesis was right, because I found some sounds that moved a small object.

Materials

  • 2 liter PET bottle
  • soft drink straw
  • conduit tube
  • a base (some plywood)
  • a grain of rice

Procedure

  • Place one grain of rice in the topmost side;
  • Speak, sing and/or yell in the cup, and see how the rice behaves;
  • Try to keep the same sound longer when the grain moves.

Building

  • Cut the bottle so that we can make a ramp with the label;
  • Screw the bottle to the base
  • Cover the hole with the label;
  • Divide a straw in the middle and tape one of the half to the label;
  • Cut a hole into the bottom of the cup and insert one end of the tube. Attach the other end to the bottle lid.
