Special Characteristics

One of the most important characteristics of lobe-finned fish is the lobe in their fins.

Unlike other fish, sarcopterygian fish have a central appendage in their fins containing many bones and muscles.

Additionally, the Sarcopterygii is known for having enamel on the teeth.

Movement + Feeding

LOBE FINNED

FISH

C l a s s i f i c a t i o n

Movement: main mechanism of movement is

their tail

Feeding: similar feeding habits

to modern pikes or salmon

Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Chordata

Superclass: Osteichthyes

Class: Sarcopterygii

Reproduction

General Characteristics

Reproductive Strategies: External fertilization and development

Number of Offspring: Generally release millions of eggs, in hopes that a few will survive

Life Cycle

Sarcopterygians are placed in the Osteichthyes group (bony fishes), because their skeleton is bone rather than cartilage, and are therefore most closely related to Actinopterygians

They can range anywhere from .5 inches to 15 feet

The basic structure and function of the fish body are similar to those of all other vertebrates.

Two noteworthy types of Lobe Finned Fish are the Coelacanths and the Lungfish.

It is estimated that Coelacanths can live up to 60 years of age or more.

Lungfish can be extremely long-lived, and one kept in captivity is around 80 years old.

Ocean Life

What Do They Eat?

Preferred habitat within the ocean: Coelacanths live in the benthic zone, between 200 - 300m along steep underwater slopes and shelves.

Geographic location: waters of the Indian Ocean, Africa, and South America

"As a group, bony fishes have a diverse range of food preferences.

Some are herbivores (plant-eaters); some are carnivores (meat-eaters); some are omnivores (plant- and meat-eaters); and some are detritivores (animals that eat decomposing plants and animals)."
