When the British Mandate was lifted in the Middle East the Jews called for independence almost immediately. In 1948 the Jews called for the true creation of the state called Israel. Palestine said that they will not accept Israel as an existing state and thought that it should still be Palestine.
In 1896 Theodore Herzl published "The Jewish State". It supported the idea of Zionism and a Jewish state. This led to many Jews want to start a Zionist movement.
In 1947 the United Nations created a partition plan for the Palestinian state. The partition suggested that the Arabs and Jews be separated into different states. However Jerusalem was neutral so any group could visit. This caused many arguments in who should have control of the Holy City.
