Tuscarora War
was the beginning of the Indian wars.
Why?
The Yemassee were being cheated out of there items and given unfair prices in trading for five years. They finally had enough and attacked.
The natives were already mad with the South and North Carolinians because they were taking their land
Yemassee lived in SC. They had a strong relation with the Carolinians and traded with deer skin.
They started to attack Florida tribes and kidnapping to sell to the Carolinians as slaves
In 1707 the SC government made the Board of Indian Commissioners to regulate trade, and enforce fair trade products
attacked because they were cheated in business and charged money for 5 years
April 14, 1715- William Bay, Samuel Warren, and Thomas Naire met south west of Charlestown to calm down the Yemassee.
The Yemassee. decided to settle their trade debts by attacking the white settlers along SC
The war started on Good friday(April 15 1715)
Bay and Warner were killed and Nairne died after a few days of ritual torture
Not only Yemassee, Other tribes stopped trading and were attacked
the worst of the war was over in April 1716
there were three phases
militia(citizen army)defeated the natives, lasted until June 6, 1715
Second started a few days later, Carolina was on the losing side until January 27, 1716 when Cherokee started to help settlers
Third phase lasted until a peace treaty was signed in November 1717.
The conflict ended around 1718, lots of damage and there was no more trading deerskins until 1722
400 settlers were killed, property damage= 236,000pounds, military costs=116,000pounds
Most Yem. where dead and the few who survived moved back to Florida
This war was longer than other wars with Natives, cost more, and more lives were lost
more land was open at the end of the war
Taught the colonists some lessons
responsible for themselves(protection, land
Had to treat the natives better if they wanted to avoid future wars

(This is the Yemassee war)
The Tuscarora Indians started the first major war. It began in North Carolina, the Tuscarora were going to be forced out of their land to make room for four hundred swiss settlers, so they attacked. The Indians killed two hundred colonist which caused North Carolinians to ask for help from S.C. forces. S.C. sent a force of five hundred Indians and thirty settlers, led by Colonel John Barnwell. They attacked Tuscarora and destroyed their settlements and captured Indians and kept them as prisoners. Eventually a peace agreement was made. In 1712 , the Tuscarora Indians attacked North Carolina for the second time. South Carolina helped again and did not leave until the war was finished.
The Yamasee war was fought 1715-1716. The Yamassee war involved every Indian tribe that traded with the colonist. April 15, 1715 the Yemassee attacked present day towns of Port Royal, Pocotaligo, and Yemassee. The war was caused by the mistreatment of Indians. Settlers cheated Indians out of business deals and charged them high prices when trading. On June 6, 1715 South Carolina’s citizen militia defeated the Indians. A few days later the Cherokee decided to help the colonist. A peace treaty was signed November 1717. The remaining Yemassee returned to Florida. The Yemassee war was important because it showed how weak the enforcements were in South Carolina and taught settlers to treat Indians better to prevent future wars
