Election of 1860

Wilmot Proviso

Compromise of 1850

Introduced by the Free-Soilers in Congress.

Congress has the power to determine under what conditions new states will be admitted into the Union.

Slavery would not be allowed in the land acquired in the Mexican cession.

Northern Whigs approved

The Northern states planed on using this power as a means of phasing out the institution of slavery.

Southern Democrats opposed

New Mexico and California's admission as a slave state, based on the Missouri Compromise would have created an imbalance in Congress in favor of the slave states.
