What kinds of human skills can automation replace?
logical, linear, sequential, rule-based skills
Any job you can reduce to a series of predictable steps is disappearing. This is exactly the type of job that the majority of middle-class Americans held in the past.
We are leaving the information age and entering the conceptual age:
Left-brain skills like number crunching and memorization are going to matter less.
Right-brain skills like creativity, synthesis, and empathy will become the most important (and profitable) skills in an advanced society.
SKILLS IN DEMAND ARE:
Hard to outsource
Hard to automate
Deliver significance along with utility
Our students will not necessarily be best served by large amounts of knowledge or narrow specializations and the isolated skills that specialization involves. They need to be able to think outside the box and between specific disciplines.
A liberal arts education that emphasizes empathy and the ability to think creatively across disciplines will best serve our students in the new job market.
