“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Confucius What Confucius said is exactly what I am aiming for. The Recreation and Leisure program is flexible and can easily combine my interests of recreation and tourism. Recreation is an essential element of a human being. I am deeply interested in bringing fun activities for those who are older or disabled and am passionate to learn how to maximize the potential of these individuals despite their limitations or disabilities. This program offers a variety of specialization including: Recreation and Sport Business, Therapeutic Recreation and Tourism and Parks Management. It is top rated and I am looking forward to becoming one of its members. Through the four years of undergraduate, it can let me gain invaluable insights and knowledge of the field. Furthermore, it has the first MA and PhD programs which is convenient for me to advance my studies. Just like Confucius, I hope to combine my passion for recreation and introduce the joy of it to others, rendering my job part of recreation.

Confucius

Vivien Yung

While on the trip, I get the chance to see the world, taste traditional local food and broaden my horizons on different world issues through understanding different countries and cultures. Tourism is meaningful. Along the journey, the culture, who we meet, the places we see can allow us to reflect upon our life. Moreover, the opportunity to experience various lodging, services and facilities like food, games, entertainment, shopping is the main reason I want to join the hospitality field. I would like to share the fun with others and let them feel the way I feel.

What Confucius said is exactly what I am aiming for. The Hotel and Food Administration and Tourism Management programs are flexible and can easily combine my interests of food and tourism. I love traveling with my family or school since I was a child. I find that I really enjoy organizing trips by myself as it is very meaningful and fun and would rather do that than joining a tour group. For each trip, I would plan the itinerary, gather lots of ideas and try different ways to make it work. This lends to why I applied for Tourism Management and Hotel and Food Administration as I hope that they activities that I enjoy will become my job in the future.

Hotel and Food Administration and Tourism Management programs

Please summarize the reasons why you wish to pursue a career in the hospitality industry:

Prefect for Fukien Secondary School

I believe working in an exciting environment and enjoying the work I love would lend itself to passion for the field. Recently, due to the growth of tourism and food, the hospitality industry is now not only limited to the tourism, hotel, catering, and retail but also to recreation and leisure and even planning and human resource. This field allows for multivariate employment and there is a variety of jobs depending on our ability and other careers might not have as much job opportunities as the hospitality industry.

Please indicate any extracurricular activities, outside interests, achievement awards, or anything else, which you feel may be pertinent to your application.

I was chosen, through teacher recommendation, as a member and leader for 3 years in Fukien Secondary School Prefect team in Hong Kong. The whole team consisted of 30 students from grade 9 to grade 11. It is my honor to be Prefect as we help teachers maintain school discipline, establish school ethos and through training, become a model for fellow students. Furthermore, as a Prefect, I volunteered with various organizations such as 30 Hour Famine, organized and held conferences and events which allowed me to gain self-discipline, self-confidence and to have a positive outlook in life. After 3 years of training, I gained valuable leadership skills such as independence, self-confidence, interpersonal and organization skills that will allow me to integrate into Guelph's student body and further hone these skills.

Just like Confucius, I hope to combine my passion for hotel, food and tourism and introduce the joy of it to others, rendering my job part of recreation.

Moreover, I have also been on multiple exchange trips to China such as Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Wuhan to deepen my understanding of the Chinese culture and to explore my roots. I learned something after each visit and each trip has taught me the value of independence and toughness. For example, I was in The Republic of China Military Academy for one month and got a distinction award out of 300 classmates. During that month, I learned about discipline and life management. Also, two years ago, I was honored to be chosen to go to Wuhan along with the Hong Kong Education Minister “Commemorate the centenary of the Revolution - Hubei exchange trip”. We attended conferences and discuss educational policies and ideas. It strengthens my national identity and sense of belonging to the country.

"The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page."

This quote by Saint Augustine resonates with me as I love to travel. I went on various exchange programs since middle school to experience different cultures. When I was in grade 7, I was chosen as one of ten students from my middle school to go to England as an exchange student. It was my first time travelling alone. I learned to take care of myself and the importance of safety. Being a Chinese from Hong Kong, it was my first taste of being in a different culture and seeing large group of non-Asians. Since I was living with a host family, I got to experience firsthand the intricacies of dealing with a different people group.
