Symbols in Othello

The handkerchief has many symbols in the play Othello by Shakespeare. It symbolizes love, manipulation, and trust. Iago uses the handkerchief in his favor to turn things around from a token of love to a cloth of hatred.

manipulation

Iago uses manipulation to create jealousy in Othello's mind. Making him believe with out actually seeing, that his beloved wife Desdemona. Plays Othello like a puppet on strings. With a small item like a handkerchief Iago stirrups problems and further making Othello hate Desdemona, for his own good and gain.

Iago knows that the handkerchief is an important item to Othello. Knowing from everyone else Othello unconditionally will trust and believe him, he plants the handkerchief in Cassio's hands. Making Desdemona look like she is unfaithful and has committed adultery with Cassio.

Handkerchief

LOVE

The lack of experience with women, Othello ultimately believes Iago over Desdemona. Iago uses that to his advantage. Planting the handkerchief in Cassio's hands and whispering lies in his ear about Desdemona sleeping with Cassio. Causes Othello to rage in jealously overlooking everything he believes about trust and rationally thinking out problems, straight to having Desdemona killed. Though he struggles to even put a scratch on her skin

The handkerchief was a gift from Othello to Desdemona as a token for his love for her. As long as Desdemona has the handkerchief, he believes she is faithful and honest to him
