The

Long-Term Effectiveness

This program may be great for short-term weight loss, but is not very effective in maintaining long-term weight loss. When users reach their desired weight, they usually decide to leave Weight Watchers for good and without the SmartPoints program to let them keep track of their calorie intake and the exercise suggestions, they become completely lost. Weight Watchers does not instill the skills that are required to keep the weight off for good, so members that leave Weight Watchers have no clue what to do next and quickly regain weight. Eating less calories can also result in low blood pressure and blood sugar levels, which can cause dizziness and fainting.

Conclusion

This program could go either way for people. If you need to be told what to eat and how much, the points program is a great start for your desire of short-term weight loss.

However this program does not emphasize on long-term effectiveness, because it does not instill any advice in terms of keeping those pounds off for good. Leading to members getting lost after they leave the program and resulting in them quickly regaining the pounds.

The Science and Theory behind the Diet

SmartPoints

Claims and Promises

Weight Watchers

-The Weight Watchers PointPlus program guarantees users will lose 10 pounds after the first month and two pounds after every other month

-Diet Plans can be made convenient because they are built around the users schedule.

-To have a highly effective support system, to help encourage users to keep the weight off for good.

- Claims to be one of the most convenient and easy to use diets.

They believe that creating a caloric deficiency is essential for weight loss. When you burn more calories than you consume, that usually results in weight loss. So, this why Weight Watchers focuses on healthy calories so much. The Weight Watchers' PointPlus program assigns every food a SmartPoints value, based on its nutrition and calories. (Higher amounts of saturated fat and sugar increase the point value, higher amounts of protein bring the point value down.) Choices that have nutrition facts that can be considered healthy and are low in calories cost less points, and nutritionally dense and unhealthy foods cost more points. Every user is given a certain number of points to use for foods, this amount is based on their activity level, height, weight and gender. Users use SmartPoints to purchase certain foods and if they stay within their balance, they are guaranteed to lose weight.

"Success starts here"

"Nobody else does what we do"

Pros of the Weight Watchers diet

-No foods are forbidden. There is no list of foods to avoid on Weight Watchers like you'll find on other diets.

-Nutritional tips, cooking advice, and lifestyle education are offered. If you attend Weight Watchers meetings, your leader will share good nutritional advice with the group

-Cooking at home is encouraged. You're more likely to eat healthy foods if you cook them yourself. Weight Watchers offers recipes and cooking tools to help you learn how to prepare healthy meals.

Their Approach to Dieting

Cons of the Weight Watchers Program

-Too much freedom to eat. The ability to choose anything you want to eat may prove too tempting for some.

- Users can easily use all their SmartPoints on unhealthy foods. For those type of dieters, weight loss plans that offer strict eating guidelines may work better.

- Eating less calories can also result in low blood pressure and blood sugar levels, which can cause dizziness and fainting.

- Promotes packaged foods such as granola bars, chocolate pretzels and even popcorn cheddar crisps and claims that contain harmful ingredients.

- Claims to be convenient, but weekly meetings to your Weight Watcher adviser and having to keep track of points is not really convenient.

Weight Watchers main goal is to assist adults that are overweight according to the BMI scale, in losing weight through eating more healthily and getting more exercise, through a variety of different diet plans. It ensures users that they can eat what ever they want, as long as they keep track of the number of “points” they’re eating in each dish and balance it with the exercise "points" you receive from participating in certain workouts on the website.
