1509:

• Henry VIII became King of England, he was a devout Catholic.

• John Calvin was born

1520:

•Pope Leo X issued a degree threatening Luther, the Pope was mad about comments Luther has made referencing the church , especially as he became more popular

1517:

•Martin Luther posted the 95 Theses to make a stand against a man named Johann Tetzel- a man that was selling indulgences

1521

1547

•King Henry VIII writes an attack to Luther’s ideas, the Pope appreciates this and titles Henry ‘Defender of the Faith’

• Other people like Holy Roman Emperor Charles V opposed Luther's teachings

1541

•Henery VIII died, his three children and last wife outlived him. Edward (his only son) was nine when he got the throne and was guided by devout Protestants advisers which created religious turmoil

•Charles V went to war against Protestant princes because he still believed that his subjects should remain Catholic

•Protestants in Geneva, Switzerland asked Calvin to lead their city

•German peasants wanted to revolt and end serfdom, Luther was disgusted with them them and encouraged German princes to stop the revolt, this ended in 100,000 deaths (of peasants) feeling betrayed many peasants rejected Luther's religious leadership

•Henry wanted to annul his marriage with Catherine - but the Pope would not allow it

•German princes that had remained loyal to Pope Leo X and Church agreed to join forces against Luther's ideas

•Henry started to dismantle the Popes power by having parliament pass a set of laws

1531

•Parliament recognizes Henry as the head of the Church

1533

•Henry secretly marries Anne Boleyn (second wife) she is beheaded in 1536

1534

•Act of Supremacy completes Henry's break with the Pope. AOS called on people to take an oath recognizing the divorce and accepting Henry as the official head of England's Church.

•Thomas More was hung for treason because he wouldn't accept the terms of the act saying people recognized Henry VIII divorce

1536

•Calvin published Institutes of the Christian Religion, a book that expressed ideas about God, salvation, and human nature

1540 - 42

•Henry VIII remarried two different women, executed Catherine Howard (5th wife)

1546

•Martin Luther died

1553

•Mary the daughter of Henry VIII and (one of his many wives Catherine) took the throne

1558

•When Mary died, Elizabeth I (Anne Bolyes daughter) inherited the throne

1559

•Knox put Clavin's ideas to work

1560's

•Calvinism became Scotland's official religion

1564

•John Calvin died
